The ZX80 was followed by the ZX81<\/strong> in 1981.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ZX81 was extremely inexpensive compared with many competing computers. It used a simple black-and-white display and had very limited hardware, but it introduced many people to programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sinclair’s founder, Sir Clive Sinclair<\/strong>, believed that computers could be made small and inexpensive enough for ordinary households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next machine would take that idea much further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Birth of the ZX Spectrum<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The ZX Spectrum was developed as the successor to the ZX81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sinclair’s engineers wanted a machine that remained affordable but offered colour graphics and better sound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The computer was designed around the Zilog Z80A processor<\/strong>, one of the most popular 8-bit CPUs of the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The name Spectrum<\/strong> referred to the computer’s colour capabilities, a major improvement over the black-and-white ZX81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The ZX Spectrum was launched in April 1982<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Its price was one of its greatest advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One of the most recognizable features of the original Spectrum was its rubber keyboard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Instead of conventional mechanical keys, the computer used small rubber buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The keyboard was compact and inexpensive to manufacture, helping Sinclair keep the price low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Spectrum’s graphics were unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It had a resolution of 256 \u00d7 192 pixels<\/strong>, with a palette of 15 displayable colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      However, the computer used a distinctive colour system in which colour information was stored separately from the pixel bitmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Each 8 \u00d7 8 pixel character cell<\/strong> could have only one foreground and one background colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This produced a phenomenon known as colour clash<\/strong> or attribute clash<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Fast-moving objects could therefore appear to have strange blocks of colour around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Rather than being simply a weakness, however, the limitation became part of the Spectrum’s visual identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Despite this limitation, programmers managed to produce surprisingly complex music and sound effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
