The Commodore 64 (C64)<\/strong> is one of the most famous home computers ever produced. Released in 1982<\/strong>, it became enormously popular because it combined relatively low cost with excellent graphics, sophisticated sound, and a huge library of software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The C64 helped define home computing during the 1980s. It was used for games, programming, education, music, business, and creative projects<\/strong>, and millions of people encountered computing through one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Origins of the C64<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In the early 1980s, Commodore was already an important manufacturer of home computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its earlier PET<\/strong> series had established Commodore in the personal-computer market, while the VIC-20<\/strong> had become one of the first affordable colour home computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The VIC-20 was particularly important because it demonstrated that a reasonably powerful colour computer could be sold at a relatively low price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commodore wanted to follow the VIC-20 with a more powerful machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project that became the C64 was developed during 1981\u201382<\/strong>, at a time when Commodore was facing increasingly strong competition from companies such as Atari, Texas Instruments and Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new computer needed to be inexpensive, but it also needed something that would make it stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That something was its graphics and sound hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Birth of the C64<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Commodore 64 was designed by a team led by Robert Yannes<\/strong>, who was responsible for the computer’s famous sound chip, the SID<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The graphics hardware was based around the MOS 6567\/6569 VIC-II chip<\/strong>, while the computer used the MOS 6510<\/strong> as its main processor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The machine was named the Commodore 64<\/strong> because it contained 64 KB of RAM<\/strong>, an impressive amount for an affordable home computer in 1982.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its specifications were particularly impressive for the price:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Commodore 64 was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 1982<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The original machine had a distinctive beige\/brown case that has since become one of the most recognizable designs in computer history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Its relatively low price was a major selling point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Commodore was able to keep the price competitive partly because it manufactured many of its own semiconductor components. This gave the company greater control over production costs than many competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The VIC-II supported hardware sprites, scrolling, multiple graphics modes and a 16-colour palette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hardware sprites were particularly important for games because they allowed moving objects to be displayed without programmers having to redraw the entire screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This helped make games on the C64 visually impressive compared with many competing computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Developers became extremely skilled at pushing the hardware beyond its advertised capabilities. Techniques such as raster interrupts allowed programmers to create effects that seemed impossible from the machine’s basic specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The SID provided three independently programmable sound channels and offered capabilities that were unusual for an inexpensive home computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        A user could turn on the computer and immediately start writing BASIC programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        One of the most common accessories for the C64 was the Commodore 1541 disk drive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The 1541 was not particularly fast, but it provided a convenient way to store programs and games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
